This support inspired Kayleen to give back to the organisation that helped her during her incarceration. She joined Prison Network’s LEAP over three years ago, driven by her understanding of the profound impact Prison Network has on people who have been through the justice system. Even after her release, she continued to receive support by Prison Network in the community. She first learned about Prison Network when the staff and volunteers arrived each week, bringing art and craft — activities that became a lifeline. Kiki says “Prison Network helped me build hope, self-esteem, and prepare for life after release”. “The most significant impact was the support I received to help me cope with the shame and stigma of incarceration which strengthened my relationship with my husband and children.” After her release, Kiki has continued her involvement with Prison Network through LEAP and the annual Christmas Hamper packing event, which she now participates with her son. Passionate about advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves, Kiki believes that family support and education are key to reducing recidivism. She is dedicated to improving the circumstances of those in custody, using the skills and insights she has gained through her journey.</image:caption>

This journey was driven by her determination to return to the community as the best version of herself. After her release, Steph found comfort in joining Prison Network’s Women’s Recovery group. “It’s the only place I didn’t feel judged and could relate to everyone,” she says. “We process our past and have fun in the community at the same time.” Now employed in a similar peer worker role, Steph continues to use her lived experience to support others.
