Human Library
During Law Week, Prison Network and the Beyond the Stone Walls Advisory Collective hosted a Human Library. An event designed to bring people together through story, empathy and conversation.
Participants had the opportunity to ‘borrow’ living books, each a real person sharing their lived experience. These included people who had experienced incarceration, alongside educators, students and professionals working within the justice system.
The sessions created space for deep listening, thoughtful questions and respectful dialogue. They were not about advice or scrutiny, but about honest conversations that challenged stereotypes, reduced stigma and built understanding of the justice system and those connected to it.
The response was overwhelmingly positive. Participants left with new perspectives and a stronger appreciation for the power of listening. One attendee shared, “It was an incredible experience! Thank you so much, Prison Network. I learnt so much from the conversations and truly appreciate the volunteers for sharing their experiences.”
The event showed what is possible when people come together with curiosity and openness, breaking down barriers and building understanding one conversation at a time.
